Gotu Kola Extract Organic

Native to India, Japan, China, and Indonesia, Centella asiatica is a low growing, creeping herb that thrives in the hot, moist climates found throughout Asia. Gotu kola can often be found growing near slow moving water. A member of the Apiaceace family, the herbaceous perennial has small, round, bright green leaves with white, light purple or pink flowers and produces an oval shaped fruit. Gotu kola translates from the Sri Lankan Singhalese language to mean cup-shaped leaf and has several other common names referring to the unique shape of its leaves including mandukaparni in Ayurveda, meaning frog-leafed, and sombrerito in Spanish translating to little hat.

Gotu kola is known throughout the herbal world as a potent botanical. It has been utilized for thousands of years in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda for its beneficial properties including as an ally in supporting healthy brain functioning. In fact, in Sri Lanka, it is common knowledge that elephants, who have a reputation for their memory and long life, graze on the plant. Gotu kola supports overall cognitive health.*

In Ayurveda, gotu kola is considered tri-doshic and is used to soothe mental turbulence. Throughout Asia, the herb is known for its healthful and calming effect. It is even referred to as ‘the fountain of life’ in China where legend boasts that one gotu kola eating herbalist lived for over 200 years. Known as ji xue cao in TCM, the herb is considered sweet, bitter, and astringent in taste and energetically cooling.

Our gotu kola extract is macerated using fresh organic leaf and organic alcohol. Gotu kola tincture can be taken on its own or in water or juice. It makes a fine companion in herbal formulations, blending well with herbs like brahmi extract or hawthorn extract. The liquid extract can also be added to herbal teas such as memory zest tea or green tea.
