Hibiscus sabdariffa is a woody shrub that prefers tropical conditions but can do well in temperate climates if planted in evenly moist soil with full sun. Hibiscus is a member of the Malvaceae family and stand out with their lobed white to yellow flowers and bright crimson calyx. The dried or fresh calyx is most often collected and used for their color as a dye or as a flavoring for food and drinks.
Hibiscus can grow to be fairly large at around seven to eight feet in height in ideal conditions. The sweet-smelling flowers bloom from midsummer through fall. Mature calyxes will form where flowers drop off and can be harvested for use throughout the growing season. They are best about three to seven days after the petals fall.
It is recommended that seeds are first scarified with sandpaper and then scattered on fresh loamy soil in the spring as soon as temperatures reach at least 60 degrees. Young starts should sprout within one to three weeks. It is important to consistently water young plants and ensure they are grown in a wind sheltered location.
