Wild Yam Extract

A native of eastern North America, wild yam inhabits a wide span of territory from the southern Provence of Ontario, Canada down to Florida and from the Great Plains to Rhode Island. Dioscorea villosa is a twisting, climbing vine with deeply veined, heart-shaped leaves and long, tuberous rhizomes. This perennial and dioecious member of the Dioscoreaceae family favors damp, sandy soils along the borders of woodlands and thickets.

There is great deal of misinformation among consumers, practitioners, and natural product vendors alike about the connection between Dioscorea villosa and progesterone. Wild yam naturally contains saponins yielding diosgenin, a steroid-like substance. While diosgenin can be manipulated into human hormones in a laboratory setting, it cannot be converted into progesterone in the human body. Wild yam contains no progesterone, natural or otherwise.

Wild yam has been incorporated into Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years since the time of the writing of the Divine Husbandman’s Classic of the Materia Medica. The roots and rhizomes of this botanical have also been utilized in North American indigenous healing practices for their wellness-supporting qualities. European settlers later took to the healthful properties of the root and incorporated it into American folk herbalism. Wild yam root is typically prepared as a decoction or crafted into a liquid extract and is often blended into multi-herbal formulations.

The dried roots of wild yam are macerated with organic alcohol in small batches by our expert team to create an effective extract. This bitter and soapy tasting herb can be taken in water or juice or combined with other extracts such as motherwort, dong quai, or black cohosh. Wild yam tincture may also be added to teas including peace tea or wise woman tea.
