Often called coriander leaf outside of the United States, cilantro leaf has been utilized as a food and for its wellness support for millennia. Cilantro is typically employed fresh as a culinary garnish for its bright, citrus notes, however the dried leaf can be used in a similar fashion. The herb can also be made into a tea or extract.

A member of the Apiaceae family, Coriandrum sativum is an herbaceous annual with thin, hollow stems and bright green foliage. Cilantro produces umbels of tiny flowers which ripen into an aromatic seed commonly called coriander. The plant can reach several feet in height and is typically cultivated in gardens worldwide. Native to the Mediterranean region, cilantro leaf has been used for over 5,000 years. It is a historically prolific herb, having been brought to Britain by the Romans. Spanish conquistadors introduced it to Peru and Mexico, where it spread north to the Americas.

Considered energetically cooling, cilantro leaf is often added to spicy foods, a phenomenon that is relevant to several cultures around the world. Cilantro has a long history of use dating back thousands of years. In fact, the herb is mentioned in several ancient writings including Sanskrit texts, the bible, and Egyptian scrolls. Cilantro leaves have a long tradition of utilization as a carminative. In addition to supporting the daily functioning of the digestive tract, the leaves were also employed internally and externally to provide support for the chest. Modern day research has shown that cilantro also provides overall wellness supporting properties.
