Description

Native to parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, Berberis vulgaris is a small shrub with tart, edible berries, and thorny branches. The plant’s root contains berberine, a bright yellow plant constituent thought to be responsible for its wellness-supporting properties. Barberry root has a history of use in traditional healing systems from around the world.

A member of the Berberidaceae family, Berberis vulgaris is a thorny shrub with small, oval leaves and clusters of yellow flowers ripening into oblong, red berries. The shrub also features yellow bark, similar to its cousin, Oregon grape. Barberry’s tart fruits ripen in the late summer or early autumn and are less bitter than cranberries.

Barberry root and berries have both been utilized in traditional healing methods such as western folk herbalism, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Native American healing practices. As an alterative, bitter, and astringent, the root has been used to help support overall wellness for centuries. In folklore, the plant was used for protection.

Typical preparations of barberry root include extracts, topical applications, and decoctions. An ancient tradition was to create a yellow dye made from the vibrant wood. Barberry extract is astringent and bitter and can be taken in hot water or fruit juice. It is often used for its healthful properties and is blended into herbal formulations. It could be paired with herbs such as milk thistle extract and echinacea extract.
