Our anise essential oil is a middle note steam distilled from the seeds of Pimpinella anisum. This oil can crystallize at cooler temperatures due to the anethole content. Anise seed oil (Pimpinella anisum) should not be confused with star anise oil (Illicium verum) which is produced from the fruit of a different botanical. It is both soothing and uplifting for the mood, helpful for respiratory support, and makes a wonderful addition to massage oil blends or in a bath for its warm scent and physically calming attributes.
Aroma
The aroma is sweet and lightly spicy with licorice-like qualities.
Constituents
Anise seed oil typically contains (E)-anethole, foeniculin, and estragole. (E)-anethole and estragole are also found in the essential oils of star anise and bitter or sweet fennel, which are primary constituents lending to the characteristic licorice aroma.
Blending and Uses
Anise seed is an incredibly versatile essential oil. It has a strong scent alone but blends well with many different essential oils to meet a variety of needs. Anise seed oil is useful in massage oil blends for supporting occasional cramped muscles. It is also warming on the skin and can support circulation. Blend with ginger for a soothing abdominal massage oil.
Whether in a massage oil recipe, used in the bath, or added to diffusers; anise seed and lavender oils marry well to help promote relaxation and ease mental tension.
The combination of rose oil with anise seed and helichrysum is a beautiful and skin-loving blend for nourishing and helping to improve texture. The soft florals of rose and earthy helichrysum oil temper the stronger notes of anise seed. Carrot seed oil is another great match for anise seed in facial oil.
Anise oil can also be used in homemade cleaning recipes when combined with black pepper, thyme, or basil essential oils. It also blends well with bay, cedarwood, coffee absolute, orange, and pine.
This oil has the potential to irritate skin so caution is recommended when using topically, be sure to dilute this oil properly at 1-2% in recipes.
Packaging
1/2 oz. and 1 oz. essential oils are packaged in amber glass bottles with drop reducers for easy application. Larger sizes are packaged in amber screw cap bottles and do not come with reducers or droppers.
Safety
This oil is potentially carcinogenic, may modulate reproductive hormones and may inhibit blood clotting. Never use essential oils undiluted, in eyes or mucus membranes. Do not take internally unless working with a qualified healthcare practitioner. Keep away from children and pets.
Before using perform a small patch test on your inner forearm or back. Apply a small quantity of diluted essential oil and cover with a bandage. If you experience any irritation use carrier oil or cream to further dilute the essential oil, and then wash with soap and water.
