A member of the Apiaceae family, Bupleurum chinense boasts umbels of yellow flowers and sickle-shaped leaves. Native to East Asia, bupleurum has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for millennia. Referred to as chai hu in TCM, it is employed for its beneficial properties and in moving qi (energy) throughout the system. Bupleurum root can be used in decoctions and extracts.
The bitter, acrid, cooling root of the bupleurum plant has a Chinese name that literally means “kindling of the barbarians.” The plant itself is a perennial ornamental that has sickle shaped leaves and clusters of small yellow flowers. Bupleurum is also called Chinese thoroughwax and nan chai hu.
