Chickweed Extract Organic

Chickweed is an annual that is native to Europe but can also be found across Asia and North America. Abundant in lawns, sidewalks, and open areas, Stellaria media has been a useful and beneficial herb in traditional European healing practices for centuries.

Chickweed is easily recognized by its straggling, succulent stems bearing paired leaves and small white, star shaped flowers. In fact, the plants genus name, Stellaria, comes from the Latin word for ‘star’. A member of the Caryophyllaceae family, chickweed is a low-growing annual thriving in high trafficked, disturbed areas. It is said that there is no part of the world where chickweed does not grow; it is even found in the North Arctic regions.

Traditionally chickweed was used fresh as a nutritious spring green in salads, pesto, and other culinary dishes. This small but mighty plant has a history of use in traditional European herbalism and American folk herbalism for its healthful properties. The herb was often employed in various topical applications as well as internally for its demulcent properties. Dried chickweed herb is often infused as chickweed tea, macerated in vinegars, tinctured, made into an external wash, or used in skin care creations. Chickweed is considered energetically cooling and moistening.

Our organic chickweed extract is made from fresh herb in small batches at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon. A quality extract and mild in flavor, chickweed tincture can be added to nettle extract, red clover extract, and alfalfa extract. It would also make a good addition to herbal teas such as vita-blend tea and spring care tea. Or simply add to water or juice.
