Damiana Extract Organic

Damiana has been used in Mexico, Central America, and South America since the times of the ancient Aztecs and remains quite popular today. The origin of the common name damiana stems from the Greek daman or damia meaning “to tame or subdue.” It is the feminine version of damian and possibly infers that damiana is the wild one who tames.

A member of the Passifloraceae family, Turnera diffusa is a woody shrub with small, aromatic, serrated, green leaves and fragrant, bright yellow flowers. The low growing shrub has tough, gnarled stems ranging in color from brown to yellow. Damiana’s native range extends from southern Texas to South America and east to the Caribbean. It is believed that the indigenous Guaycura in the Baja region of Mexico were the first to use damiana. According to legend, the herb became widely distributed when the Guaycura began trading with the Aztecs. Damiana was also highly valued in ancient times by the Mayans, who used the plant in a similar manner to the Aztecs and the Guaycura.

Our organic damiana leaf is harvested in the mountains of Mexico where it has traditionally been infused to make damiana tea. Damiana has a long history of use in age old healing modalities for its healthful properties and amorous spirit. Although its noted effect on sexual desire has been its primary historical use across cultures, it has also been valued for its relaxing and calming effects. Additionally, damiana leaf has been employed to support the daily functioning of the digestive system, as a tonic, and an enjoyable beverage. Typical preparations of damiana leaves include in tea blends, herbal smoking mixtures, infused as a liquor, or macerated as damiana extract.

Our organic damiana extract is quality crafted in small batches at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon. An alluring and aromatic tincture, we like to combine it with a variety of extracts for a unique and individualized herbal formulation. Suggestions include California poppy extract, kava kava extract, and reishi extract. Damiana tincture can also be added to cacao-based drinks, luscious syrups, or herbal teas such as easy day tea and fecundi-tea. Or simply place directly on tongue or in juice or water for ease of use.
