Goldenseal Root Extract Organic

Goldenseal is a perennial herb in the buttercup family native to Canada and the eastern United States. Hydrastis canadensis has palmately lobed leaves with a spring ephemeral, small, white flower which ripens into a red drupe. The herbaceous plant is distinguished in traditional folk herbalism by its yellow roots which are typically between one and three inches long. It likes to grow in open woodlands and reaches a height up to twelve inches.

Goldenseal root has a long history of use throughout indigenous cultures of northeast North America. The roots were utilized across various tribes as a healthful ally, bitter tonic herb, and as a yellow dye agent. The Cherokee were known to use the yellow root internally as well as externally for its various beneficial qualities. The plant later came into prominence among European settlers in the 1800’s and has remained a popular folk herb since. Goldenseal root is now known for its major constituents, berberine and hydrastine, which are thought to be responsible for many of the root’s beneficial properties.

Threats from over-harvest and habitat loss have placed goldenseal on United Plant Savers’ “at risk” list. For this reason, our organic goldenseal root used in our extract is carefully cultivated for quality and sustainability. Our goldenseal root tincture is bitter and yellow in color. Goldenseal extract blends well with a variety of herbs and is traditionally formulated with echinacea extract and elder berry extract. Goldenseal root tincture can be taken with water or juice or even added to herbal teas such as our 5^th chakra tea or a simple lemon and honey infusion.
