Description

An evergreen shrub or small tree belonging to the Elaeaocarpaceae family and native to the temperate rainforests of Chile and Argentina, the maqui has smooth bark, reaches about 3-4 meters in height, and bears small star-shaped yellowish-green flowers that produce edible purple-black berries much favored by birds. Maqui berries are picked seasonally by the Mapuche people who often enjoy them in various traditional beverages and culinary recipes.

Maqui berries are considered a “superfood” and are known for their healthful and tonic qualities, with their popularity now widespread throughout the world. Also called Chilean wineberry, maqui has been cultivated in England since the 1700s and began being cultivated sparingly in the United States by the early 1900s. French botanist Claude Grey documented in 1844 that maqui berries were widely consumed by the Mapuche natives as a tonic to improve stamina and strength.

Organic maqui berry is macerated with organic grain alcohol at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon. The extract has a fruity aroma and a flavor reminiscent of blackberries. It is pleasant on the tongue or in water or juice and is a delightful tonic boost in smoothies. Combining maqui extract with other extracts adds a bright spot of flavor, especially berry extracts like elder berry extract. Try adding this tincture to hibiscus high tea or berry bramble tea.
