Passionflower grows best in rich but well-draining soil that receives at least four hours of sunlight a day and prefers full sun if possible. Passionflower is a vining member of the Passifloraceae family that has many large three lobed leaves. It produces unusual looking bluish to purple almost feathered flowers that are stunning in appearance. The leaves, stems, and flowers are all collected and used for herbal tea and tincture making.
Passiflora incarnata vines can grow up to 15-30 feet in length. The flowers will bloom through the summer, and in its second year it will produce tiny green fruits. The fruit is edible but is less than ideal to eat considering its seediness.
Seeds should be soaked in warm water for one to two days before planting indoors. After soaking, spread and pat into damp potting soil. Keep seeded pots in an indoor space that gets at least five to six hours of indirect sun exposure and keep the soil moist for germination. It can take anywhere from weeks to even months for seedlings to appear. Transplant seedlings outdoors after first sets of leaves establish and outdoor temperatures exceed 50 degrees.
