Description

Native to Europe, it is estimated that teasel was introduced to the United States as early as the 1700’s. Teasel is used as a winter food source by several bird species, including the European Goldfinch, and is often grown in some gardens and nature preserves to attract them. However, in much of the United States, teasel is regarded as an invasive species. This biennial plant grows fairly low to the ground in its first year, sending up tall flower spikes in its second year, along with leaf pairs positioned along the stem which collect water and prevent insects from climbing the stalks. The teasel root offered by Mountain Rose Herbs is responsibly gathered by local wildcrafters.

Teasel is easily recognized by its prickly leaves and stem, along with its pinkish or purplish flowers that form on a large head. In previous centuries, dried teasel heads were used in the process of fulling cloth, to raise the nap on fabrics. According to the herbalist Brigitte Mars, “the common name teasel derives from the Old English word “tcesan”, meaning “to tease”, in reference to the use of the tops in carding wool. Teasel has a history of use in traditional European herbalism for its healthful properties. The root is commonly prepared as a decoction, an extract, or in topical applications.

Our teasel tincture is made with fresh teasel roots and organic alcohol at our extract facility. Teasel extract can be blended with Solomon’s seal extract, or turmeric extract, among others. It can be taken in water or juice or added to teas such as turmeric ginger tea.
